The feature couldn't realistically add anything to the game. Either you become a dedicated shmoozer/mercenary/assassin/raider, and become restricted to pretty much one aspect of gameplay until you happen to become landed again, or you spend a few years building a mercenary army, then do a Varangian Invasion-type war and become landed again. Ultimately, when being landed is tied to so many of the game's features, it would be pointless to not be landed, even if it was possible.
If Paradox don't do it, and although the old guard's wisdom seems to always find reasons that they won't, then either the remade CK2 mod (extremely popular for something that 'didn't add anything to the game') or another new one will come along and give options.
It will be fun to start as a sell-sword or maybe with some skill you can sell. Maybe you can marry for a title or win a claim in a card game.
@Razorblade Of course it's true that after some RP with an unlanded start, you would wish to start to climb the tree. I think an unlanded start will, when it comes from PDX or modders, add a lot of fun to the game.
