The Jarldom of the Northern Army....
Keeps getting bigger and bigger every year they are formed out of thin air... and a mad scramble to defend myself against a Jarldom that exists no where on the map.

So this time they throw an overwhelming force at me. 9000 against 1200. Game Over.

Yeah it can be annoying. The only way to avoid it, if you're in the territories the 'event' targets (Russia, England and Ireland, I think? I can definitely confirm Russia), is to stay Norse Asatru (might be one or the other but I think it's both). The armies actually aren't that strong, once your economy grows a bit and you can afford 1000s of men-at-arms; they're just big.
EDIT: Even if you do beat them, they'll come back again and again and again... and again and again until about 1100. "The Viking Adventurer event in vanilla selects targets by progressing down a region list in order. If a region proves difficult to the AI, like confronting a strong player, the targeting will pause its progression and only fire on that region, over and over again, cycle launching wars on the same target, ignoring every other possible conquest prospect in its region list. This leads to boring predictable gameplay that is implausible and unfun." Here's a mod which fixes that part, the quote's from the author, although it won't fix the size, I don't think, and you won't be able to play on Ironman. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2435095242&searchtext= You can turn them off by the way, if I'm remembering right, but again I don't think you'll be able to play on Ironman if you do.

I believe there is an option in the game rules to turn those off. One of the options deals with northern adventurers, and I think those armies are what that rule is about.

Definitely Ireland, so all of the British Isles at least as well. Had them attack twice so far (not me, but neighboring counties).

The bastards.

Scotland too. But I find it fun. Repetitive but fun. As Scotland, there is little challenge except going south. And since I don't do map painting for its own sake, it can get a little boring to play tall with few neighbours. These keep it challenging. But I agree, they are weak, my 3000 troops of about 700 MaA and 2300 levies defeats them. That, or an ally like a Duke somewhere in northern Europe does the trick.

Yes-sir!!!
I was playing as Meath, I ALWAYS ally with my dear cousin and nominate him as my heir, The King Of Scotland.

Exactly because, playing as Meath, I get owned by the damn Vikings right?

So this is their answer to making the map painting of Brit and Ireland to easy and all the achievies that go with it.

I wonder what the end result would be if I played as one of the Vikings, which I haven't done yet.

It seems to max at 9K. Its a very lazy mechanic they threw in the game, 9K random spawn every 5 year. I have conquered most of Scandinavia thinking that would get rid of them and now they are just spawning inside my own territory.

Yeh I think I'm just going to turn this off... I have never turned off any DLC content ever but this is just lame.

Question......

If you murder the "bastard Dane" (Reference to the Last Kingdom) leading the Northern Army, will that stop the invasion?
Zsrai May 10, 2021 @ 5:47pm
I strongly suggest turning them to 10 years (from the default 5) at a minimum, since it's still Ironman/Achievement compliant if you're going for any. If not, do whatever you want of course.

Will that only breed bigger invasion forces by giving them more time to build up?
Or it all stays the same?

I started with the finish religion, forgot what its called unnoko or something like that but I never experienced the northern invasion? Am I supposed to enable this? I bought it I just don't understand why some people are getting hit like super hard but im practically taking over the entire northwest of the map.

They actually still attack Norse + Asatru though. It's clearly a very poorly thought out event that needs to be reworked.

I was getting tired of them attacking only me for years, then my king died and lost all his allies. a month after my weak heir took over with no allies, here comes the 9000 strong northern army again...I rage quit... Then I added the viking fix mod and started up a save before my king died and haven't seen the northern army yet, so hopefully that's the end of it.I didn't mind the first 2 times they attacked , but after the 4th or 5th time it got to be very unfun...
