Orthodox or Catholic?

So, I'm king of Sicily and am faced with two options:

1: Continue up Italy into the Holy Roman empire and create the empire of Italia
2: Swear Fealty to the De Jure Liege of the Byzantines and continue taking territory within the Byzantine empire.

So I'm leaning on #2 just because I like the Byzantine Empire more than the Holy Roman Empire (Plus I play in the west way more often) but since I'm going to be a vassal to Orthodoxy while I'm a Catholic, it'll probably be better to change the religion to Orthodoxy..........or is it?

I can't seem to find any reason to be an Orthodox over a Catholic other than the fact that the Byzantines are Orthodox. Are there any advantages to being an Orthodox over a Catholic? Would it be better to switch to Orthodoxy if I swear fealty to the Byzantines or should I just try and stay Catholic?

Catholics are considered astray by Orthodox Christians which is a very small opinion penalty, the emperor cannot revoke your title for being catholic instead of orthodox.
You can still join crusades and pester the pope for cash and would be in a better position to take holy sites if you went east.

If you go Orthodox however you can grab Rome without as many repercussions and potentially reform the Roman Empire after taking over the Byzantine Emperor.

Orthodox is the way to go for the simple reason that it makes taking Rome easier. Would recommend conquering Italia, consolidating your power, and then declaring independence when you're strong enough to form your own independent empire.

If you're a vassal for long enough, negotiating a favorable contract with the Eastern Roman Emperor (low taxes, low levy, march) can put you in a strong position to expand into Italy or North Africa with the protection of the Empire.

It seems logic to convert to orthodoxy.
If you have faith, of course, not by mere hypocrisy to serve your ambitions. Otherwise you'll end in hell because in both religions the so-called god doesn't like it and you can't fight it or negociate with it.
