I can't give them the corresponding duchy/county because it belongs to my vassals, or vassals of vassals. I can't be bothered to revoke and untangle the web of vassals, causing lots of tyranny or wasted time fabricating. But maybe the first half of your post was correct, if I just land them with their own land maybe they'll come back. Dunno I"ll give it a try if it happens again.
If you are creating your own religion, under 'Clergy Doctrines', set clerical marriages to disallowed. If you do that, then they can't usurp someone who is already married.
