Tips for restoring Roman Empire?

I would like to do it the "difficult" way, that is, to start with Roman culture and with Hellenic faith, and being a simple count. I tried to accomplish this goal months ago, but I always fail as literally everyone is trying to crush me for being Hellenic ... any recommendations of where I could start to get a less troubled start and make my way up to the glory?

I've had good luck starting as a 1066 Asatru in Ireland. You need to aggressively expand because holy wars will be declared against you. Up in Iceland would work too, because then you can expand into Ireland/Scotland.

I recently made a custom duke of attica who was hellenistic, then at the start of the game change your contract with the emperor to "title revocation protected" in exchange for some higher taxes, also start swaying him so he doesn't imprison you for being a heathen (sadly you can't change both "title revocation" and "religious rights" protected at the same time without a hook). With that you are set up to slowly take over byzantium from the inside. if you want to start as a count you can just take another byzantian vassal.

I think you mean : restore the old borders of the roman empire since the "Byzantine" empire is not the real name, that word was invented years after.the empire fell.

The Real name was Basileia Rhomaion, a name in Greek that means Roman Empire. When the western Roman empire fell, it was not necessary to use the adjective "eastern" Roman empire cuz the another part cease to exits, the roman empire still continue existing as a great power.

What i am saying is that in school teacher teach us about byzantine when in reality the name.is roman empire, it is amazing to realize how the roman empire not fell entirely in 476 but in 1453.

The empire that people still call byzantine ( even when that word was not used for the people of those centuries) was called empire of Greeks in order to insult them, but everyone knew they were Romans, Arabs and Seljuk and even before those tow, the assassin's empire , all of them called roman empire to the Byzantine. Europe cease to call the Byzantine as roman when Irene took the throne but the excuse of the pope to crown Charlemagne is not valid since the regalia of Constantine is false and said by a german roman emperor.

The Greek to insult German roman emperor , used the word rex that means king instead of emperor or Caesar.

Just rename your empire i to Basileia Rhomaion or roman empire and conquest all the old borders.

Note: Greeksdont call themselves as Greeks, they use other word and mostly they refer to theyselves as romans

start as one of the karlings. i suggest king of east francia. murder your siblings. claim as much titles as you can. you can easily get holy roman this way. then try to marry your heir one of the byzantine princesses, this might take time. then the heir of your heir will have claim on byzantine empire title. this was the way for me and it was kinda easy.

I'm sad paradox did not change their name to the original one even when many people were asking for it. I mean just put the Basileia Rhomaion name paradox why you cannot do that?.
