Had to buy a VPN in order to stay logged into Paradox account

Convinced a few friends to buy the game and ran into an issue where every time I would log into my Paradox account I would immediately be logged out. Tried everything from verifying, to reinstalling, to resetting my game settings. I saw a post from October talking about how a VPN fixed it. At that point I was starting to feel bad for my buddies who had just payed $50 to watch a title screen while I figured out a way to simply log into the game, so I tried it. To my surprise, it worked like a charm. Is anyone else getting this issue? Will I need a VPN every time I want to play multiplayer?

I think multiplayer is just busted, I can't ever connect with my friend and I read similar reports.

control panel -> system & security -> windows firewall -> allow an app thru windows firewall -> (now allow CK3 to be both "private" and "public"). This fixed the problem for me.
