All Finnish and Sami rulers made Asians
While I understand where you might get this idea, but I assure you, current choice definely does not portray Finnish or Sami people truthfully. You had it pretty close with CK 2 but this is just a joke.

The company is based in Sweden I think? Googling Sami people shows somethign different from whats in the game, however back in this era maybe they were a bit more eskimo looking? And maybe over time they mixed a lot with swedish and norse people to look how they do now. I did see some gogle images of a really old photo and they definitely look eskimo-sih.

I wouldn't say eskimoish but definely more eastern, being part of Finno-ugric language family, which alone points towards the east and around Gulf of Finland, but not all characters should share this as some Finnic people came from south (Estonia and such) along with Karelians, which made Sami people move up north, but of course Paradox made Estonians Asian too.
Fun fact: Hungarian is considered to be part of this language family.

Yeah they went overboard for sure. I hope they change it. Finns being yellow Asians is a meme. The amount of North/East Asian DNA is low in the average Finn. Idk about the Sami though.

It is weird. Turkics, Finns and Chinese people all use the same character model, but Indians and sub-Saharan Africans got unique ones despite those ethnic groups having a pretty small presence on the map.

Devs are in Sweden, and they have more interaction with Africans and Indians than East Asians. Guess they just modeled from the world around them

Or maybe they had a limit on how many different models they could get built and in the game by ship time...

Sami, Finnish and Hungarians today look mostly European due to interbreeding with Germanic and Slavic people but back then their phenotype would've been that of far east Asians.

False. In the late 800s? No, Asian ancestry of Finns was long removed by then. Any intermingling would have been thousands of years prior.

Maybe, I don't know the exact date they arrived there.
