On which terrain should I build which holdings?
On which terrain should I build which holdings?
Does some terrain make more money buildings available and are better suited for cities?

Best terrain in my opinion in order are: Farmland, plains, marshlands, Hills/forest, dessert, anything else. Farmland is by far the best for money. Plains are just a worse farmlands. And hills/forest gives you benefits for constructing other holdings and reduce army maintenance.

All terrains have the same building options, which give the same amount of money and levies to any holding type. The only real difference are the two optional holding buildings - Guilds and Monasteries, which are only available to Cities and Temples respectively - and the Main Holding Building, which provides the same bonus on any terrain.

Cities give you a little more money thanks to their Holding buildings, and this money can be used to maintain more MaA regiments, which is generally considered a better deal than the extra levies provided by Castle Holding buildings. However, Castles are naturally defensible, deal attrition damage to enemy armies, and make it take a lot longer for the enemy AI to siege down your home territory.

Personally, I'd take a cue from history and build castles on hills and mountains and other crappy terrain - the reason being, if an army is besieging a castle, and you send a relief army to help your castle, the battle will be fought AS IF your attacking army is the Defender. Thus, if you put a castle in a mountain province, you'll get the opportunity for a mountain defense battle, which is good (unless you're spamming cavalry, in which case plains and farmlands might be better).

But, when in doubt, build cities. If you need more castles, you'll probably know.

Also, you can probably tell from the Wiki, but Farmlands have the best money producing buildings (Manors and Farms) and can support the most levies. The rougher the terrain, the less gold and levies you can potentially wrangle out of them - so, again, when in doubt, gobble up Farmlands, Floodplains, and Plains for yourself. If you need rough terrain to help your defensive plans, you'll probably know.

If you're searching for convenience rather than min/maxing, then building castles is the way to go, for one reason: you can revoke a baron from a castle without incuring tyranny penalty, which makes managing your domain limit easier (like when your heir inherits, or when you conquer new land, or revoke a vassal with many holdings falling into your hands...).

Well, for me, at least.

Thoughts on the Oasis terrain? Doesn't seem horrible at face value...

for economic buildings if you can have them, nothing beats flood plains because of the dev bonus. If not use farmlands or plains

mountains, hills and such should be used for military buildings.

Farmland for development and money buildings
Mountains also for money because you can build mines/quarries
Forest for archer man at arms, you can build many buildings with archer bonus
Hills and plains for horses, the terrain with most horse buildings.
the rest doesn't matter do what men at arms you are using.
That's pretty much what i do.

why do you rank marshlands better than hills and forests?
