Constant Crusades
I formed Britannia as an Irish count, and after 5 or so generations I founded a new christian faith. Since then I have had to fight off 4 different catholic crusades over the course of 2 generations. My 20k troops easily beat back their 50k, but its just annoying that they prioritize me over the muslims or northmen.

Brittania has a Catholic Site, and the area was prior Catholic. Holding that Site brings the Catholic faith down a notch. It will always be a prime target to get back.
Its probably some NPC asking the pope to take back the lands from what they perceive as Heretics.
You will always have a target on your back from inside your realm and from outside, as well as the Pope and None Christians.
Its an interesting challenge.

I once held 2/3rds of the world under Britannia, Catholic as well.
But some of my provinces in Eastern Europe were held by jews, even though they were my subjects.
NPCs kept asking the Pope to Crusade against the jews. Go figure. So they can take the land. The NPCs were my subjects as well.
If the papacy wasnt held by a member of my dynasty there would be wars in my land over that.
I had to persude the Pope to go after the Muslums instead every time.

Its not a great mechanic in CK2 and sounds like its not any different in CK3.
You need to just understand how this will be used against you and prepare for war.

It's because in vanilla crusades have a cooldown timer of just five years. You can try my Fervour Inversion mod which extends the crusade cooldown to 30 years:

Or to do it yourself go to:
Steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings III\game\common\casus_belli_types\00_religious_wars.txt
Scroll down to lines 3159, 3260, 3579 and 3680, and change them from 5 to whatever cooldown duration you'd like. I think 30 years is reasonable. Then save as to your own local mod with the same file structure ("common\casus_belli_types"). There's a guide on how to do that in the first part of this video:

I think some crusades are tied directly to Culture. I've played games where I was Irish and reformed my religion (I call it Eden and Edenites followers for Divine Marriage. Live like Adam and eve as God intended and your bring the Garden to Earth) and I take all of England and I never get targeted. But my next game, still reforming to the very same religion I started in Iceland which is Norse and Crusades against me where none stop.

Norse eventually turns into Noregien, and I believe it's weighted this way to handle the viking invasions. The problem is the culture Norse is so widespread.

Was coming here because of a similar problem.

The Pope is constantly declaring a crusade for Jerusalem, which I, a Lollard, control. Although for some reason the crusade is against the Muslim realm that owns the surrounding lands, and I'm tied in as a defender.

But what really annoys me is that these crusades are a waste of everyone's time. Catholicism, in this world, is a minor interest, with most of Christendom split between Lollard and Orthodox. The only significant Catholic presence is Georgia, which every few years has to feed its youngest and brightest to the ever-hungry maw of the pointless papal war machine. All Catholic states combined struggle to raise 20,000 men - whereas the Islamic states have about 30,000, and I add another 40,000. That's not a contest. That's just a few years and a bunch of money wasted on nothing.

I'll try Morven's suggestion. Being new to modding, I need to ask - will this work with an existing game, or does it have to be added from the start?

Many thanks.

You can add and remove it any time to a save game. The modded cooldown timer will be applied when the next crusade/great holy war concludes while the mod is active. Crusades that ended prior to the mod being active won't be affected.

The problem is when you don't join.

The crusades don't target religions, they target holy sites that are not controlled by a christian religion or by a christian religion who considers Catholicism evil.
The empire of Alba that contains Ireland and England+wales+Scottland has 3 holy sites so it's no wonder that it's targeted in priority, Jerusalem has another site and the last one is in Rome.

And I suppose it's the same for any religion that can have a type of crusade but for their own holy sites.

That's holy sites for Insular Christianity. Catholicism only has Canterbury in the British Isles.

Really ? Because I reformed from insular to my own but still christian faith and had the same sites. I also think I remember another christian faith having the same sites, I thought they were common to all christian faiths : live and learn

In any case the AI still goes for holly sites not religions per se, you can be an evil infidel if you don't control any holly site of the catholic they won't bother you.
Same if you do control that holy site but your christian faith is considered righteous by the catholic.

Crusades are definitely triggered too frequently. As my on my current playthrough i was getting a crusade against me every 10 years or so. It got so bothersome that i went and took the all popes land.

currently in my wessex game, its now 1077 and there has not been a single crusade:(
I wish there were a "Dismantle Islam" decision like there is for The Papacy.
