King vassal has imprisoned my only heir and i'm close to dying, what do i do
I tried right clicking to offer ransom but i dont have the option. I dont like this, i currently hold 2 empires and my vassal has the audacity to imprison my heir and game doesn't let me do anything about it, what can i do besides changing to play as my vassal, releasing my heir and going back to my original character?

Are there others in the line of succession that are valid to play?

Yes, i have extended family but the 3 currently in line apart from my imprisoned heir are kids, they're not even 10yo yet i dont want everything to be left for them while they're that young

1 time that happened to me I got an option to escape that worked, I dont know if its intrigue related
2nd time I got released straight away
3rd time I asked to ransom, they wouldnt then a few days later they offered me the ransom option

Okay i fixed it at the cost of tyranny. It seems that my heir was also my king vassal's eventual heir (2nd in line) so i just imprisoned him and his 1st heir and banished them both from the entire realm, that immediately freed my heir to claim her inheritance since at that point she was imprisoned in her own kingdom

Tho its stupid, when someone of relevant status to you (family/friend) is imprisoned, you should be given an option straight away to try to negotiate their release, either with gold or give them a hook on you and not wait until the jailor feels like it. My heir was imprisoned for nearly an year so he was just letting her rot there. And the vassal was a humble, compassionate and patient AI ontop of that. Like, excuse you. Please act according to your personality. Thanks.

Ugh. I'm dealing with this right now and it's really annoying. My player heir had a duchy in one of the kingdoms in my empire. He joined in as an ally on somebody else's claim for the kingdom of Estonia (my empire) and was captured in the war (I guess?), imprisoned by his liege, and stripped of his titles. Now I can't even ransom him out?

What are my options here? Doesn't seem like I have any the more I think about it. Just wait until my ruler dies and then ransom myself out when I take over as the heir? Kinda sucks.

How exactly did he get imprisoned?

I only know of the upbringing event for Rowdy children - your son murders the child of a vassal, then you have options to deal with it. One of them imprisons your son.

Otherwise i just don't see a way how a vassal could imprison anyone from your court.

Yeah, not sure. I went back to a previous save. He was definitely fighting the war. At the time of the save, his side has -100 war score and he hadn't been imprisoned yet. His liege must have imprisoned him after winning or something.

ha! Lesson learned, I guess! He already has 265 gold, so I figured that would have been enough to ransom himself out. Maybe the King of Estonia is just being a jerk about it. I really want to go in there and imprison/crush that king now. I don't care if he's my half brother.

Well the AI will never ransom anyone who still is at war. Then it probably depends on the opinion of the prisoner and his liege, and wether the AI needs the money or not.

And i also had a vassal of mine imprisoned for decades by a foreign ruler, which prevented me from revoking his title (hostile faith). I think he already was in prison when i seized his county as a de jure claim.

Yeah, the war has been over for a while now. He was sitting in prison for probably a year, still landed, but he finally had his titles revoked. It's a little irksome, because this is all within my empire, and I feel like there should be a way to resolve this, either diplomatically or by force.

Well, it happened. My son and player heir died in captivity, giving my ruler a level 2 mental break and turning him melanchoic (his first son was also murdered years back). So I denounced the king, attempted to imprison him, and then smashed him to pieces when he revolted. I can't revoke his titles without taking on a lot of stress owing to being generous, so I suppose he's just going to go away for a long time. We'll hope the next elected king is less of a jerk.

Follow-up question: is there any downside to giving your player heir a mayorship in a city within one of your counties? Is there a benefit to it? Like, can he start building his diplomatic network, accruing prestige, etc.?
