Have a look at the various modifiers, rolls are random.
As far as rolls are concerned, I know they say it's all totally random but I just can't accept constantly seeing a 80-95 percent chance failing without using weighted dice.
What happens with Alba tends to depend on what happens in the North. If Northumbria manages to resist the Viking horde you tend to see Scotland overtaking Alba. Similarly if Strathclyde proves particularly resilient. If both get hammered by Vikings you tend to see Alba start taking over, but even then they're as prone to commit suicide by trying to take on pretty much all of Scandinavia over Orkney.
Although when they do form they do seem to have a weird habit of turning up in Southern Iberia for some reason.
Alba isn't that bad.
Alba wrecks face in all my games as well. But one time, I saw a member of the Ivaring dynasty sit on the throne of Alba, that made me smile.
How could you let your siblings get stronger than you??
