Sudden change in Player Heir
I'm playing as Gotland and conquered enough to make myself king of Denmark. I had a son who was to become both Primary Heir (thanks to the Scandinavian voting thing) and Player Heir, and then all of a sudden my Player Heir just changes to his half-brother who is a year younger and, obviously, not set to become Primary Heir of the kingdom. Perplexed, I change my vote so he becomes king instead. My character dies and I take over as king as the second half-brother but the first half-brother still inherits the De Jure capital, which I don't understand but anyway. I play for a bit with the first half-brother now as my Player Heir (and Primary Heir) because I have no male children of my own, I'm guessing (Male Preferred Succession Law, or what it's called). Then all of a sudden the Player Heir changes again to yet another half-brother (who happens to hate me and is a criminal) and wasn't even part of the primary lineage from the previous king and once again my plans are thrown out the window. What determines the Player Heir in these circumstances?

TL;DR: What is happening when my Player Heir changes to some other bloke without any indication as to why?

In the Realm tab F2 go to succession and at the bottom to elections, there you can see who's voting for who and why. If you have a hook you can force them to vote for your favourite heir.
(should also be under issues)

Thanks for your reply. My conundrum is not related to the voting system per se. I _was_ voting for my Player Heir, who was designated to become king. Everything dandy. What happened—twice, mind you—is that all of a sudden, without any in-game event indicating as to why it happened, my Player Heir (not Primary Heir) changed. To my understanding, the Player Heir has pretty much nothing to do with the in-game systems of inheritance and what-not. It only designates who you gets to play as when your current character dies. So why does it change seemingly willy-nilly?

If your primary title is the “king of x” and x is an elective monarchy then the winner of that election will bring the title and be your player heir. Change primary title.

Looking at my game state now, that seems reasonable. However, the first time it happened, the Primary Heir was still the first half-brother so I had to reactively change the vote to my new Player Heir for him to even become king, rather than the first half-brother and my original Player Heir.

Anyway, how do I change primary title?
