How do you marry into land?
I managed to become second in line to the queen of France but failed to kill the heir so I didnt get the land. how did I do this in the first place? I assume marrying my son to someone in France. But how do I do this reliably? So far its pretty random from what I can tell.

Getting into the line of succession then killing other heirs or the parents is the main idea. You could also get into the line of succession and just let it be under any type of partition. You should be able to have your heirs get some land this way, hopefully at least a duchy.

Every child of a ruler gets a claim on their parent's titles when they die, which is inheritable for one generation after the child themself dies.

So you want to marry either a daughter or a sister, murder or war them onto the faction's throne, then have a child with them. Assuming they remain in power until they die, your child will inherit their titles.

In my rags to riches run in Russia I started as Pinsk, grabbed a county nearby so I have a full duchy and pledged myself to Minsk nearby. They steamrolled from duchy into a kingdom and made me a duke and a spymaster.

Being spymaster I could fabricate a hook and use it get a marriage thing going. And then when I got the kid to murder the king to get that free kingdom faster.

It was super easy to pull it off but I imagine I wouldn't be able to do that without a high intrigue char who was made spymaster. So yes there is a random factor to that.

Sorry I dont understand. So I marry off my daughter and then kill the king/queen?

Well, best bet is usually to marry your heir off to someone who already has land, obviously. Even queens pop up on the marriage market occasionally. However, they WILL definitely want a matrilineal marriage. This may be countered by certain dynasty perks, as well as certain lifestyle perks. The chivalry tree in military line has a significant bonuses to marriage proposals in this regard. Romancing can obviously help with this too, though may take longer than is needed.

Otherwise, you can get your heir betrothed to the second in line, and try to murder the actual heir. If the murder scheme fails, your offspring may still have a claim anyway, that can be pushed.

This is the easiest way for me. You get your heir married to their second in line(make sure it's of your dynasty). Then you kill the legitimate heir making the second in line the first in line for the throne. Once your heir has kids, those kids will be the heir for both your thrones

I will try this. Does the person I marry my heir to have to be of my dynasty though? That seems difficult to achieve.

No. For example, say you're the King of England. You want to form Britannia at some point, but lack a good casus belli to expand into Scotland, Wales, or Ireland. You notice that the King of Scotland has a son and daughter, and is unlikely to produce more children because he has a 58 year old wife. His daughter is unmarried. You marry your heir to his daughter. If you kill Scotland's primary heir, their Kings son, your sons wife will have a good shot at becoming Queen of Scotland. When you die, your son becomes King of England, and creates children with the Queen of Scotland. If they have only one legitimate heir, that son inherits both Kingdoms.
