You can't usurp the duchy if your liege is not independent.
1) So you can try and fabricate the Duchy claim for the one county you don't have. I have tried this by rejecting the county numerous times so depends on luck if you also get the duchy claim. Not a great option.
2) Right-click liege and Make war for independence then create the duchy when you are independent. This is the best way I have found.
I am assuming here that your liege holds the duchy title. This was the case with my game.
I also tried this but couldn't figure out how to make it work. Would like to know how this works!
Is that the same as right-clicking on liege and Make war for independence and does that also mean you need the stewardship perk to be able to do this.
I am going to reload the start of the game and do some testing on this!
The perk you are thinking of is the "Enables claim throne scheme", I would imagine you would have to set the scheme going and hope you get enough power for it to trigger in your favour.
No, just click on it, pay the prestige and go to war with him. I used this in one of my earlier playthroughs when I wanted to become a duke as well.
