You start with a kingdom and lots of land and therefore income. You own all the land which means you have no vassals to deal with until you want to or need to give land away. On top of that you don't have to deal with raiders as their are no tribal place near you, there are no holy wars being called on you because everyone in India has a similar religion, and your only neighbor (at least in my games) is usually too busy fighting with others north of you to try and bully you or conquer you. When you want to start expanding you have access to elephants and those are fun to play with because they stomp everything and the AI usually can't afford them so they don't have them.
This means you have lots of wiggle room without lots of pressure from hostile neighbors.
