How in the absolute ♥♥♥♥ do you inherit depression?

Mood disorders like depression and anxiety are inherited all the time. Depression isn't simply "I'm sad". It's extreme, and long-term.

Scroll up, "inheritable"

EDIT: Sorry, might not be in the actual character finder but it definitely is under the spouse finder.

Ok in the spouse finder it works and the tooltip even says so. Strange that the tooltip in your own trait doesn't say that it can be inherited:

That's really odd since it makes zero sense that melancholia could be inherited by your children. I've certainly never seen any child with it, it's usually an event that can occur roughly around the age of a midlife crisis, in my experience so far, but I've never seen anyone been born with it. Might as well be a bug or incorrect tooltip description since one is saying it can be inherited and the other doesn't mention it.

Whether it makes sense or not it isn't a bug or incorrect tooltip. And I actually have seen it inherited a couple times, really amusing to see a baby who is melancholic.

You may have missed my post above. There are essentially 2 Melancholic traits. One is the health trait (which you can acquire as a result of events) and the other is congential (which is obviously inherited).

While the congenital variety can obviously be passed on, the health trait I'm unsure of.

I saw it, I'm gonna guess it too is inheritable seeing as the wiki doesn't discern the two. EG; Lovers pox is listed as a health trait but it is congenital from the moment it's recieved while Melancholic is wholesale considered congenital.

I did some more poking around in the character list in my game. When you search for Melancholic there are two types. Both are marked as Health Traits. However, one says at the bottom "This trait is Congenital" and the other does not. I have characters in my game that have both varieties.

So, it seems that it is not always inheritable, and if it is it will be marked as congenital in the tooltip.

Actually there is, you can use the suicide option. This will surely get rid of the trait....and get rid of your character as a side-effect.

But i dont want to kill him off yet?

It is possible to get the melancholy trait removed. I do not know of the exact requirements or if its just RNG. I just had my melancholic chad of an emperor go to therapy with our court physician. After a few events of following her advice, I lost the melancholy trait.

Because major depression is a mental illness, like Bipolar Disorder, organic panic disorder, etc... It can result from various flaws in brain chemistry, most usually in the serotonin cycle.

Just found out that if your religion grants you the meditate in seclusion Decision you can apparently "lose a negative trait" No Idea if that includes Melancholy but Im trying it now. Twice I've meditated and it didn't leave. (yes I have the non inheritable version)

There are two traits of Melancholic: One that is congenital and can be inherited and one that is not.
CrUsHeR 25 AGO 2021 a las 1:03
All the "psychiatric" traits - Lunatic, Possessed, Melancholic - have two versions, congenital and obtained. So if your character gets tortured in prison and that makes him lunatic, this is of course NOT inheritable.

You also may notice that all those lowborn courtiers with lunatic+genius have the non-inheritable version, so it is safe to use them for marriage/breeding.

This is also noted in the wiki, read the description on the top
