Tribal 867 county-level start basically impossible?
Yeah so I'm definitely not a super experienced player, but is it me or anything tribal in 867 start as county-level is basically impossible?

You get instantly raided by everyone. I lose atleast 1-2 councillors per assault and getting declared war on by kings 10x my size within the first year...

I'm sure there's something wrong that I'm doing but I just can't figure it out.

You can always (unless at war) swear fealty to a bigger person to escape imminent destruction.

Tribal impossible? Que? Tribes are arguably the most overpowered government form in the early game.

Is it easy to start as a county when everyone around you (including yourself) can attack basically anyone for a county at a time? No. Seek allies fast.
I'm assuming there is a way, but I also think it largely depends upon the where of it and a fair bit of luck. The whole of Britannia is a volatile mess, and while I don't want to say it's impossible, when faced with the Norse hordes which will come within at least the first 10-20 years it's certainly not easy.

Alba is pretty easy and they are tribal.

I started as Northumbria in my first game and got immediately steamrolled by a massive doomstack of vikings. That's sort of the worst case scenario though, and the rest of them don't seem all that terrible.

Starting as Desmond 867, right now I own half of Ireland after securing alliances with the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms to the east. The only thing having stopped me from full conquest are the constant invasions by Vikings... Ireland can't seem to catch a break, in history they are always being invaded by someone. xD

It is kinda Northumbria's faith.

I played the African countess and your husband owns the land right next door and since you are married you start allies. It is a pretty safe start, but all the countries in the area are dirt poor which brings it's own issues.

Northumbria instantly dies due to both of the sons of Ragnar having wars on you for 50% of your territory each at the start of the game.

My personal favorite start (also in ck2) is the high chief of Lithuania. Pretty stable and easy expansion. Good luck!

Start as Haesteinn of Montaigu. Trust me, best start in the game by far.

Getting allies and/or becoming a vassal are super important for any county ruler but especially tribes due to raiding.

Being a vassal might feel like "losing" or something but the goal of the game is to survive...not necessarily be independent...besides you can overthrow your new liege from internal politics and take it over yourself in a generation or two.
