1. There are a LOT of horror stories about Game Pass and corrupted data, loss of access, etc. Enough that I'm tentative.
2. I don't trust Microsoft's cloud with my data.
3. Steam is, as you say, quite convenient.
4. Reports on whether Game Pass games are compatible with DLC vary, and I've seen no official word on the matter.
But most importantly...
5. I avoid subscription services for games whenever I can. Unless I play a lot of games on Game Pass, when that price shoots up to $10 per month (and it will, check the yearly subscription cards on Amazon; $5 per month is a promotional price), after the fifth month, I'll wind up paying more for CK3 than I would have on Steam.
1) Do you like a lot of the other games on Game Pass (PC) or do you already own most of them or don't want to play a lot of them.
2) A game like CK, if you like/love it you wont just play it for 40 hours, a lot of people play these sort of games for 1000+ hours.
3) DLC I believe you will still have to purchase seperate if you love CK3 as gamepass doesn't usually include DLC
4) Game pass can and will remove and add games at anytime.
The biggest trouble with a subscription service like gamepass is that if you love a game, £3.99 suddenly becomes almost £50 per year (Doubling after promotional period). If you play very few games on there or just 1 or 2 you might as well just buy the game.
Although I'm a PS man and not Xbox, I think Gamepass makes more sense if you have and play on an Xbox too. Yes the subscription is more, but it includes a lot more games and also includes pc gamepass.
NEVER BUY ANYTHING ON THERE.
Don't get me wrong, gamepass can offer great value for someone if you are using to play the games available in its catalog, but you should use it as a "rental" not actually owning the games. Never purchase a game on gamepass, it really isn't worth it for one simple reason.
Absolute lack of control over the game files. Games downloaded through gamepass will not only have the standard DRM that almost all games comes with these days, but they will also have all of their files encrypted by Windows. So if you for any reason want to modify a gamefile, tough luck, you can't even access the folder where the files are located, even less modify the file.
So for a lot of games that means modding is completely impossible. No idea if this will impact Ck3 or not, its possible that Microsoft will allow its users the right to use mods on Ck3, but its absolutely not a guarantee.
So never buy anything on gamepass, if you think the subscription is worth it for you, go for it, have fun, but don't purchase the games directly in there, you will regret it.
Edit:^ the rant above is only about purchasing the games there, i used gamepass in the past for its "service" feature of allowing me to play games in there and here's my opinion on its service feature:
I didn't got much value of it, in fact i spent more money on it than i should have considering how many games i actually played in there (only played 4 games in there, which was, Kingdom Come Deliverance - of which i purchase later on steam due to complete lack of mod supprot on gamepass- Metro Exodus - which i purchase later on GOG because i wanted to own the game-, Outerworlds, and A plague tale: innocence) never got around on playing anything else in there and i kept that sub going for over 6 months, so yeah i definitely wasted money in there).
That's the problem with subscription services, especially these where the sub fee is relatively small month to month, that you can end up forgetting to cancel when you are not using it, which was my problem, i kept thinking "ahh i'll play another game in there at some point" And i never did. So i wasted a lot of money on gamepass and didn't get much value of it, so if you do get the subscription, try not to make the same mistake i made and actually use it.
* $1 for a month - you can really give CK3 a shakedown and see if you like it (plus there's a way to get a 14 day extension)
* After a month - you can keep playing on Gamepass IF you find other stuff you like, or buy on Steam, or wait for first CK3 sale which will probably be at holidays or) not but if not any good.
Agree about need to cancel if not using.
I dunno. It's a hopeful thought, but I get the feeling we won't be seeing a sale until next spring at least, and if I had to bet, I'd bet on summer. If, of course, the game does well. If it does poorly, all bets are off.
OK so if CK3 is fantastic I'm out a buck. I can live with that. Plus I can play the new Flight SImulator as well.
If you use it to try out the game, you can still buy it on Steam and you've only dropped a buck. I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you want to buy it on Steam, then that's a good option too.
Thanks guys for answers.
September 1st can't get here sooner
This is all true and for a game like this, where you should expect to play not just a few weeks or months, but maybe 8 years.... you don´t want to be forced to use a rental service for that amount of time, unless you only want the rental service.
However... every month games are pulled from the pass, this means that you could potentially play CK3 half a year on the gamepass, then suddenly they announce that it will be gone and thus all your save games, all your progress... gone. you would have to buy the game another place.
You are also most likely not going to be able to mod, get expansions (of your choosing) music packs, etc etc.. I would stay away.
Situations where the gamepass is good, unless you dislike the above reasons like "I don´t trust, I don´t wanna rent, etc) is games that take 6-50 hours to complete, without any or much replayability.. Take a few new AAA titles, they might release there.. fine, if you have the time you could finish two of them and get the exprience in 1-2 months, paying maybe 10-20 euro depending on the current sale or not.
Basically.. it depends on you as a person, how you play and how invested you want to be. (I am very biased towards steam) that is ofc an important note.
Are you getting at launch? I'm thinking of waiting for 1.1 or 1.2 to not have to deal with launch bugs.
