no, you won't be able to play as the Pope, since the pope is not a dynastic title that passes through to the child of the ruler.

Since gameplay mechanics rely on the dynastic passing on of titles to an heir.
Big sad, the possibilities you could have

You will not be able to play as any title that cannot be inherited father to son.

It would be pretty nice if you could play as the pope. Maybe do it like elective and if your chosen successor doesn't get elected you end up with a principality or something. You might bounce around the map during the course of a game, but that might be interesting.
I would not care that I can't select my heir or having any land. I just would strengthen the power of the church, influence major rulers. bring stability in Europe. etc.

Reason one: "The pope" is not a dynastic title, and thus out of question.

Reason two: As the religious head, the pope has immense power to excommunicate, divorce, extort money, grant claims or invasions, and of course crusades. For a player this would mean endless abuse potential.

Though besides that, he is restricted to the papal states. I.e. he will never form an empire or anything like that.

just kidnap the pope.

The patrician houses are dynastic. None of the clergy is.

fair enough, makes sense

Also in CK3 you cannot play as a republic. At least not on launch. I kind of think they wanted to do a better job with the non-feudal governments: nomads, merchant republics and Imperial Byzantium.

You can strike out from your religion and form your own... you could become your own "pope" in some sort of way

I would love to play as the pope, think it would make some very fun RP games. Always sad that they never made it officially work for CK2.

what? that and pagans were the funnest ones to play as, the rest were fairly tiresome

You'd be getting spammed 24/7 by all of the various requests that Catholic rulers make to the pope, and you'd have to answer them too. Wouldn't be fun... unless you could hand those functions off to the AI, but if you did that then what'd be the point of playing as the Pope? You'd basically just be another king, behaving like a king.
