*Mood* can be happy, neutral, or cranky. Right now there seems to be an issue where mood is capping at neutral in summer and winter even with a temperature machine active, so please be patient while we wait for a fix.
Here's what I found out:
Feeding - It don't GIVE much friendship per say, but the upgrade from the lab makes the produces be a better quality. That's why you can have small eggs/milk and black truffle with a gold or blue star.
On that not, NOT feeding DOES reduce friendship and make them sick if not fed enough in a series of days
Petting - THIS is the friendship gainer. The auto-petter also makes the hearts go up. Just as a comparison, my latest animals like llamma and quail were 100% auto-petted and they got all hearts very fast.
milking/cutting - doesn't give friendship exactly, but gives you skill points.
Temperature device - Don't give friendship, but prevent animals from getting sick in summer and winter. You can see them working on these seasons by glowing blue or red
So... all in all go auto-everything if you already have ranching 9.
That was my mistake, btw. I auto everything and was in ranching 7 forever until I noticed I was only getting skill points from collecting beans and truffles. YOU NEED TO DO THE WORK TO GET SKILL POINTS. I didn't realise that before
