Anyone have some tips for catching flying insects?
I swear it's like they can detect me from across the entire map. I try sneaking from farther away but the detection bar goes up WAY faster than my movement towards them and I have no idea how I'm supposed to catch these things :(

I've tried using the scents you can make from crafting and stuff but those things say "ground insects" so I'm not sure if it even helps with the flying ones. Also I'm only at the start of fall year 1 so I dunno maybe I just need more bug catching exp or a better net or something (I have a silver one right now but the only thing it seems to upgrade is the bug catching area and not the speed you move while using it)

One of the bug catching skills is being able to move faster while holding the net which might help you, but also there's a flying insect trap that you'll be able to craft later on. I got most of my "rare" insects just by placing the trap in the right place, so I didn't have to catch the bugs on my own. I didn't bother with the net and mine was still silver pretty late into the game LOL

I'm not quite so deep in the weeds that I'm catching the last few bugs, but for the most part the combination of faster movement while stalking bugs, reduced bug awareness, and an upgraded bug net has been enough to catch just about anything. Sneaking up on them from behind seems to do more for stealth than meeting them head-on, but I can't confirm that they have an actual cone of vision in-game, it just seems so from my experience.
Uppgrade the net to copper quality is mostly good enough for early on so silver is *chefs kiss*. What you want to do is get ahead of the flying insect. Raise the net and wait, then let the insect fly into your area as that takes longer for it to be alerted.
For instance, depending where you are on the map. If it is in a narrow path. Just stand and wait a min some distance back until it flies towards you. (Causion, it might stop very close to you so be aware of that)
But essentially, what you want, especially for quick to be alerted ones. Let it fly into you. Depending on how fast its alerted, you may sneak towards it as well.

try that on two flying insects and you will see a DRAMATIC change

Traps. Almost all of the rare ones I only got by traps. Leave them at the place the computer (or the wiki say) say they would spawn and go to sleep. there is a chance they will be there in the morning. I normally put 4-5 traps for the rare ones.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I've only recently unlocked traps so I think I'll start using those, as well as the laying in wait strat ;w; Here's hoping I can start catching some bugs now lmao

Traps is the only way to get them. I upgraded my net to gold and still wasnt able to get Yucca or Tiger beetle. I put traps everywhere (both flying and crawling) and just got black widow!

Osmium net or traps are the ways to go.
