Yeah we have received similar reports and the team is working on the fix so you'll be able to talk to Chieftain and other NPCs without problem again soon!

I'm getting a crash when talking to both Chieftain and Raj so far. I wanted to see the pre-beach cleanup dialogue, but am afraid to talk to people now.

Hi everyone! I'm glad to share that the crash issue when talking to some NPCs has been successfully fixed in Steam's latest version (v1.0-946).
