But I'm new to this game so I can't help you on if you can get rid of pets. Just can reassure you the reaction is fine. Games think it's cute but dogs and cats should not be barking and meowing constantly.
I got Luna the fox as a pet, mostly because I had read somewhere that you could put some kind of costume on your pets to have a dragon, but also to finally, FINALLY be able to participate in the pet race. I already had the mystical pet running around outside.
But the race went no different than when I thought I could race it with the other pet, Luna never showed. And as for the dragon costume, well, where is that? I've yet to encounter anything like that and I'm approaching the end of year 4 with only a single fish to donate and then I'm done with everything (besides marriage, saving all of that for when that is fleshed out) in the game currently available.
So, if possible I'd like to be rid of Luna. Not disliking her at all, and the relationship is maxed as far as I know, but one critter running around not doing anything and not being able to interact with besides that daily pat is enough for me.
