Anyway, I have spent around 90+ hours in this game at the moment (playing at normal speed). I'm at Rank B right now at Year 2 Spring and based on experience, you will get a lot of points basically by fully clearing the ocean (i.e. healing the coral tree), then the next one are the offerings (I got 15 offerings right now). I have around 250 donations to the Museum.
I'm definitely not representative of the overall playerbase, but I'm also at rank D for about 60 hours of gametime, then my rank progression sped up when I went from D to B. I could definitely see it slowing down going to rank A though, given how much of a mess fossil and geode RNG is and the other stuff I'm missing are season-exclusives and the advanced ranching products which really do take a while.
The game's not that much complete story-wise anyways so no need to rush.
They do get places but slowly by their very nature. You can't want to be a casual player but also want to rush to the end. 60 hours in a game like this is nothing especially if you are taking your time and playing casually.
Unless you're playing super optimally it's going to take you a couple game years at the very least, especially when it comes to catching all the critters/insects/fish.
But ranking up definitely starts on the slower side of things and ramps up because finishing certain milestones is what gives a lot of points at once.
There's really no need to rush since a lot of the end game unlocks aren't even finished. The merfolk questline just comes to a screeching halt, the dig site and savannah offering rewards aren't implemented yet. Just take your time with the game.
