Get coal by destroying rocks in your field.
Growing crops will bring you a lot of money, but not for several days to a week. Forage items, and then fish and bugs on day 3, mining on day 5, and diving on day 7 will bring more money in the mean time. You should be able to afford the second backpack in just a couple of days.
Charcoal is made by putting wood in the kiln. You'll unlock the kiln recipe when you hit level 2 foraging, so if you've been picking up everything every day you'll get that pretty quickly. You need bronze ore to craft it, so you'll need to grab some while mining.
It was very helpful and easy to understand.
Sell some furniture that you don't want/need. Personally, before 1.0, I sold the fireplace, window, and wardrobe (maybe a rug?) to buy some stuff. Chests from the furniture store I think, but can't remember exactly. Just don't sell your bed. The TV is very helpful too so I wouldn't sell that either.
