If you don't want to marry anyone, you can save a lot of money and materials by not upgrading the last two house upgrades. Just do the kitchen upgrade and you're good.
Sorry to necro, but does this mean that if you don't want to romance you therefore lock yourself out of the final two house upgrades? Or can you upgrade still without romancing?
You CAN still do the final upgrades, but there's not much point. While you can decorate the landing in the 3rd upgrade, you will not be able to do anything with the room in the back, as that is only a room for the spouse. The 4th upgrade adds kids rooms on the side, and you also cannot decorate those.
So yes, you can still upgrade if you want, but there's no real point to do so.
