The difference between fruit PLANTS and fruit TREES
I see a lot of people getting this confused. Hopefully this clears things up.

The game has two types of fruit trees, called PLANTS and TREES.

__________________________________________________________

Fruit PLANTS (called seedlings in the shop, and come in a white bag) need a 2x2 tilled space, needs to be watered every day, and will die in their off seasons. Fruit plants grown in the greenhouse will fruit all year. Their quality can be upgraded at the lab four times under the SEEDLING category.

Fruit plants include:

(unlocks at town rank E)
Plum - Winter, Spring
Banana - Spring, Summer
Rambutan - Spring, Summer
Jackfruit - Summer, Fall
Dragonfruit - Summer, Fall
Papaya - Summer, Fall

(unlocks at town rank C)
Avacado - Winter, Spring
Cocoa - Fall, Winter
Lemon - Fall, Winter
Pear - Fall, Winter
Lychee - Winter, Spring
Snakefuit - Winter, Spring

_______________________________________________________

Fruit TREES (called saplings in the shop, and come in a brown bag) need a 3x3 UNTILLED space, do not need to be watered at all, and will simply go dormant in their off season. They will bear fruit when their seasons come around again. Their quality can be upgraded at the lab four times under the SAPLING category.

All fruit trees unlock at town rank C and include:

Durian - Spring
Orange - Spring
Mango - Summer
Peach - Summer
Apple - Fall
Olive - Fall
Almond - Winter

Hi! It says in the game that fruit trees must have their surrounding 8 tiles be empty. Is this true?

Surrounding 8 tiles is a 3x3 area. But trees are actually pretty picky, and even if you have a 3x3 area clear for them, they don't like it if there are paths, fences, or items along their edges. Make sure you have at least a 5x5 space clear to plant them, and then you can put the other stuff back.

This was wildly helpful, thank you.

Side note, I hope the devs plan to let us plant trees along the paved sides of the greenhouse like you can in Stardew. That was such a good use of space before. It feels useless now.
