Cannot plant the Apple sapling

I get the apple sapling from harvest fest.
I have checked that the sapling will take 3x3 space and soil needs to be tiled
however I cannot plant on the field no matter how I tried.
I even cannot see the 3x3 green / red zone when planting, only 1x1 square, red all the time.

It needs to be UNtilled. It's also a little picky if you have a 3x3 space, but have things like fencing or paths around it. Plant the tree first and then put the decorations around it.

I also have tried untilled 3x3, only the middle untilled, only the middle tilled, ...
as this game is sometimes still quite buggy, I will take that as no solution...
