Yeah, the scent apparently you just eat and it gives you a buff. You can't place it there in the slot, even though the icon is the same.
This threw me too.

Is this Equipment slot used at all? I couldn't find anything about this slot. From the book explaining equipment slots, it seems that scents were supposed to go there, but they don't.
