A trick to get more Gold Kelps I can think of right now.
Since we can't farm Gold Kelps in the ocean for now, I'd suggest donating 160 items to the museum to get 10 Gold Kelps, complete the Rare Gems bundle ASAP to get the Slime of Replication, then use that Slime to duplicate the Gold Kelps.
I know it takes a long time but I think it's already better than buying it from the lab.

Honestly? I just buy it. By the point in the game where you've donated 160 items, I've usually got more money than I could possibly spend on anything, and can comfortably buy all the gold kelp I need.

Your way is one of the only ways to get osmium kelp, though.

How many items do I have to donate to the Museum to get that one? Also, I'm still at Summer Year 1.

IIRC it's the reward for 275 donations.

275 holy, I'm not going to grind that out. I think I'll just play until the current normal progression is done and either make a new save, or play something else for a bit.

It is a bit tricky to hit if you are starting a new save each major update. I'm not stressing it too much, although it did get a whole lot easier this update with the bug traps.

I did this several times with My Time in Sandrock.

I did, as well, and with Portia. I like to see all the changes organically if I can, it's one of the things I really enjoy about alpha/ early access.
