How to attach bait to fishing rod?

Hi all! loving the game so far but i cant seem to work out how to add the bait to the fishing rod, any help would be wonderful

You don't. Lol. It isn't like Stardew Valley.
Strangely, I've used the rod without having bait in my inventory.

Have you tried fishing after buying the bait?

You can fish with or without bait, it's not necessary.

To equip bait: In the inventory tab, underneath the toolbelt/backpack items, there are sections labelled "Clothing", "Equipment", and "Buffs". In the "Equipment" section look for the top left symbol that looks like a little fishing bobber. You can drop bait into that section to equip it and it will automatically use it when you fish. Hopefully that makes sense!

That said, I haven't found the bait to make much (if any) difference in the current version of the game. Also, there seems to be a bug where all the bait disappears next time you load into the game if you have it equipped so keep that in mind.
