I´ve played Fez. Didn´t like it and got refund. Thank you for the other suggestions!
Aquaria
Shovel Knight
Momodora 4(def check out)
Runner 2(upbeat atmosphere)
Enter the Gungeon
Definitely play cave story. You will feel at home with that one. Its very comparable.
Objectively better in every aspect other than art which is subjective.
Chasm
Dead Cells
Iconoclasts
Flinthook
Sundered
Death's Gambit
Wildfire
thank me later
How enjoyable the game is to experience is objective? I never knew.
I would like to add Ori and the Blind Forest, Guacamelee and of course Super Metroid (if you can emulate it on your PC) to my list of favourite Metroidvanias. These are better than Owlboy imo.
Take care, many of the titles that posters above mentioned are not even out yet. Doesn't seem reliable recommendation practice to me. ;)
Shantae Risky's Revenge: is the closest thing that I can think of, good pixel art, revisiting worlds with different powers unlocks some secrets, funny adventure that keeps switching up the gameplay like Owlboy does, the tone here is funny
Hyper Light Drifter: Has a simple story that takes place in a very complex world and backstory, you'll feel like an adventurer discovering a lost civilization, gameplay is good if a bit hard for the standards, the tone here is more dreadful
Bastion: mainly based on the story and this story takes place in a specific world with it's rules and events that are common knowledge within the game, events will affect characters you can revisit any place you visited and more, the tone here is more grimm/hopeful.
Rainworld: the epitome of explore and ancient/advanced civilization/ecosystem it doesn't have story besides survive but you can piece it together by exploring the world and making some logical connections, the tone here is more anxious
Agree too with Hyper Light Drifter. it's magic, but it's not exactly a platformer (you play your character from above) and the game requires way more skills.
Braid hasn't been quoted yet: it's really atmospheric and it's also a platformer - but it's more like a puzzle game than an action game. Indeed a true masterpiece for the mechanics it brings and for the art.
An old game that rassembles Owlboy a bit is Aquaria: it's more a metroidvania-like but the gameplay is quite like Owlboy. You don't move only from right or left, but you move in the ocean like a fish (as Owlboy in the sky) and you need to aim projectiles at monsters.
Finally a game I loved which is free is : Iji - http://www.remar.se/daniel/iji.php . The atmosphere is really different because you play most of time inside spatial ships, but the game mechanics are awesome and they're tons of secret + the game isn't well known enough.
Oh, and I forgot Limbo which hasn't been quoted either. Really great art and mechanics which make the game unique. Plus it's a platformer too, more puzzle-oriented.
I personnaly found Dust a too repetitive game & it's more a beat-em-all than a platformer, so I don't really think it's like Owlboy.
Great gameplay, story, and soundtrack.
Shovel Knight is excellent as well. I would say it's a bit less like Owlboy, but it's a really good platformer and the aesthetic is similar.
Also, the Shovel Knight OST is a masterpiece.
Bastion isn't all that similar, but since people are mentioning it, I'll give it an honorable mention for being amazing as well. It's a top-down shooter with a good story and interesting weapons and the like.
And again, exceptional soundtrack.
Cave Story + is a must play
Ori and the Blind Forest is beautful and fun
Dust: An Elysian Tail as said above
Guacamelee is worth checking out too.
