There are all sorts of endings, though. You can choose to retire to some villages in the peninsula as well.

Oh no, I did. Finished the 'helping people' personal goal midway through the game, and I completed every quest the best I could. Great game but it kinda sucks that the pcs ending mostly depends on a single choice you make at the start, before you really know *what* you want.
Either way, agree with what you're saying about the goal choice. I think it would have been nice if you got to pick a goal at the outset like you do now, but there would be one or two points (maybe when sleeping on the 15th or 20th day) where your character assesses what he's learned in the peninsula and you decide if their goals changed.
For example, like "I originally wanted to help people, but after seeing how brutal the people are, what happened to the ruined town, etc, all I want is to make enough money to ensure I never need to return" or "My experience with the druids and pagans in this unique nature, has taught me that it would be wrong to settle and tame this land, I just want to start a new life here in harmony with the people".
Not sure how I could've built the villages more! I finished every quest I could find & exhausted every dialogue option, and as far as I know all the npcs (aside from that mayor) loved my pc. Definitely agree with you on the rest
The dream sequence happening whenever PC completes their personal goal presents a dialogue choice. In cases of Become a Hero, Help Others, and Gain Influence the picked answer influences the ending of the game directly.
It's funny. I've taken the religious stuff as just fluff - which it turned out to not be the case, to the point I've tried second run just to see how different it can get - but everything else I collectively put under being a Fisher King and thus weighting every single "fluff" option before picking any.
Haha same here. What difference does a high or low faith score make? For the church faith all I really remember is one convo with the necromancer, but everything worked out with him in the end.
I thought the motivation dream was just flavor too 😓 wish I knew it was the difference between good end and bad end. FYI -- choose "take it easy" for better results.
Is that a better result? Truly? For your character maybe but what about all of those other people they help in the one where he eventually fails and dies?
Either your character is satisfied with only doing so much good or is never satisfied and keeps trying to do good until it kills them. The first is healthier the latter is heroic.
Bumping a very old thread here I know, but I'd been gifted this game by a friend and only recently got around to playing it. Having played through twice now i found myself wishing for this very much, there were some revelations each time that drastically changed how I looked at the peninsula.
I did complete the "helping people" goal the first time, thinking now it may be the simplest. Although by the time I finished reading through the epilogues did not feel like I'd made much impact. Which is reasonable being only one guy just hanging out a few weeks in a place (full of distrustful lying ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥) that has stagnated for ten years.
Didn't even manage to get around to visiting White Marshes the first time despite intending to all game, that 40 days goes fast when you're chasing every sidequest.
Loving this though, been completely addicted for three days. Easily the best IF game I've played all year and the character writing is unmatched.
