I've heard that Asterion's motivations are based on the player's personal quest. If you picked a goal related to money, Asterion wanted to sell the blades. Otherwise, he wanted to put them to use for a good or heroic cause.
I understand the tribe of the Green Mountain comes from High Island. They were forced to leave due to outsiders invading the island, so they decided to settle in the mountains which are much harder to reach.
I think your understanding of the story is correct.
Right? For such a suspenseful story you would think there was something massive or a very clear reason for going after those weapons, rather than just money or a shapeless "heroic cause".
The name "heart of the forest" kind of reminds me of the story of ladies in the woods in Witcher3, those 3 crones story, Some mystery or evil power dwells inside the deep woods and torques this peninsula. This evil power Thais or exploits her ambition and seduce her to raid the steep house etc. Turns out the "hearts of the forest" is just an abandoned normal short cut without anything deeper than that. And Thais' raid is just a raid.
