That is to say, this person rejects both the masculine/feminine cultural roles for themselves.
Essentially, Vaschels didn't like to be referred to as either a man nor a woman, preferring a more neutral set of pronouns.
It's rare and unusual, but there's people like that in real life too!
Ontop of the idea of sexuality already being pretty openly inclusive among the peninsula's villages as a whole, it makes sense that someone in Creeks (which is even more sexually liberated than other villages) would take a loose approach to sexual identity.
