Smithing Potency?

How do you use items that have "Smithing Potency"? I was assuming you would add them in the empty spaces to the right of your ingots, but it seems you cannot do that. When I try to right click a smithing potency item, it simply replaces the ingots and makes the recipe unuseable. Do these items do anything yet, or am I just not understanding what they are for?

So can anyone tell me what these are used for? The complete lack of a good wiki resource and the rather vague in game documentation are driving me bonkers lol. I am relying on the discussion page for any help.

Are you talking about the Catalyst and Infusion Crystal items? I was confused about them for the longest time, thinking they were intended for jewelcrafting, but they only work for alchemy.

No, they are things like bones and scales. They just say Smithing, with a potency % underneath.

Ohhh I see, those have the smithing tag because they're recipe components for later weapon and armor recipes. I have no idea why they have a % potency rating, though! As far as I know, smithing recipes are static and the stats can't be enhanced (aside from gems of course).
