I recently played on a moon with tech level 4 start (something I tried in the past but always failed on tech level 3) and won. Since it was a moon, the game was short and aggressive, but a lot of fun. The first major I attacked almost withstood me, I took their only city by the skin of my teeth and I was really running out of manpower, because my losses were kinda crazy. I was close to victory at this point, but alas one of my leaders, a governor, rebelled and instantly took one of my own cities. Annyoing, but I crushed him luckily and took the city back.
Then I created a colossal planet, started on tech level 3 (my normal way of playing) and it is super long winded and you really need to manage your resources, especially since I barely have any ruins on that map and all my neigbours are just nomads, so no cities to gobble up to kickstart my empire. I am unsure if it's too much of a slog to carry on, but I guess I will keep playing for a while.
Because of the discussion here on the forum I tried assault guns and I kinda like them. They are a bit cheaper to operate than normal mediums but punch almost the same agains soft targets. After 5 years of owning the game, I still try new stuff, that I disregarded so far. I also started to experiment more with custom troop formations.
It has many interesting rules which, sadly, hidden under the "hood", so player aren't even aware of their existance. I'd expose them in the form of numerous TOOLTIPS and ingame-CODEX, so player will appreciate the beautiful complexity!
Actually, it's hard to lose a unit in a single turn - in other games it's possible in no time!
Also, supply lines - good idea! So, the manevuring is a thing here! You can just cut them up to affect enemy efficiency!
Also, this is the only strategy game I know which provides certain amount of troops CUSTOMIZATION (other game is "Fallen Enchantress"). You have other space games where you can customize fleet though.
Also, ability to change game via dev console. Honestly, without debug mode I wouldn't play it since game has so many limitation I cannot bear. Of course, I wish it has even MORE customization options! (check suggestions thread!)!
