How to upgrade units in a formation?
I don't understand how to upgrade the units in a formation.

So, I have Infantry II model, with better weapons and armour than the Infantry I model that's in all my existing formations.

How do I get my formations to have the new Infantry II model?

Open subunit unit popup, there are buttons like upgrade/mass upgrade, select new model in the table. Best if you save game and experiment with it.
Or watch this YT video

The manual has a nice section on upgrading units, check out 5.10.11 and 5.10.12. That covers upgrading existing units.

For newly created units you should have an option to use the new model on the raise formation screen. To remove old models from the raise formation screen you need to obsolete old models in the model overview screen (the one accessed from the top buttons). Don’t obsolete something that’s still in the field otherwise they will all get returned to the SHQ. 5.10.9.1 in the manual covers ‘quality levels’.

  1. Select any unit in the formation you want to upgrade, click any subunit of the model you want to upgrade. A window should pop up with options to upgrade, mass upgrade, replace, and mass replace.
    • Mass upgrade/replace will allow you to upgrade/replace in the entire OHQ or entire SHQ. Usefull if you have the resources to upgrade everything in one go, or do not prioritise certain formations getting better units ASAP.
    • Upgrade is for foot troops only. It immediately replaces the model for a reduced cost, keeping everything else the same.
    • Replace requires readily-build subunits of the desired model in the SHQ. Necessary for tanks, guns, etc..
  2. In the model overview you can set model qualities. Obsolete models will be sent back to the SHQ ASAP - you most likely do not want this. Instead, set the "Infantry" model to low quality, and tell your formations to "tolerate" low-quality models. Once that is done, recruit "Infantry II" models into your SHQ, they will automatically be sent to replace "Infantry" between turns, whenever you have the logistics capacity for that.

Thanks for the replies.

I had read the sections in the manual. It was the clicking on the sub-units in the bottom right panel of the main screen that I was missing.
