Is there a reason to use the automatic rifle instead of the gas carbine?
They both have 100 firepower, but the gas carbine uses far less ammo so is just flat-out better. Which is odd considering they are in the same tech level.

as someone that normally cheats and only uses militia and tanks id say no.

but, someone might not be in a position they can afford to upgrade their infantry or need something else more urgently so it would depend on the situation the player is in.

i will design BP for both but i normally dont actually try making infantry until i get lasers and even then i may just make laser tanks instead.

Don't they both require an upgrade to reach? Playing on tech level 3, and they are both a tier above and are equally hard to obtain(that is to say, not at all)

In tech 3 you start with automatic but not gas powered.

Low metal planet starts can be brutal depending on how hostile your starting locations are. Even if you're not spamming MGs, and buggies the ammo consumption rates can easily put you in a hole if you're not able to bum rush ammo factories in time, stuff like this helps alot in those situations.

technically, you can start with both unlocked at t3 but its really rare. ive only seen it twice over 30 runs.

An interesting balance choice might be to make the gas powered guns take more IP than automatic rifles, representing the need for more precise crafting methods. Might not make a big difference, but still something you MIGHT have to consider in some cases, if you have both techs. (such as when you have an ammo factory running, etc)

I like that idea, but perhaps with a buff to autorifles and/or a nerf to gasrifles firepower to go along side it.

Yeah because as it stands gas powered rifles are just straight-up better. which feels weird for something that's on the same tech level.
