Out of range artillery returns fire - possible bug?
I stumbled upon a situation I cannot figure out.

I researched rockets and built my first two rocket artillery units that have a range of 4.
I attacked a city and the calculator showed that "no return fire" is to be expected.
Recon is at 160.
I see mostly infantry in the enemy city and some enemy artillery units. They are basic artillery with a range of 1.

When I start the attack the city is 3 tiles away. I am obviously out of range of the enemy basic artillery, but I do get return fire. My units get hit and even retreat after the first combat round (they have 80 Action Points).

Is this a bug? It seems like the game treats the ranged battle as if attacker and defender were adjacent to each other. Or the unit description I get (1 Artillery range) is inaccurate and they can in fact fire 3 tiles far.

Your units shouldn't get hit, but they should retreat after one turn - rockets and missiles fire all their munitions right in the first turn, and then leave the fight. That's normal.

Are you sure you got hit?
Without full recon you cannot be sure they have no rocket/missile arty unless they are a minor without a major ally (who would have annexed them on war dec anyway). Otherwise you are probably mistaking the normal dump and retreat that rockets and missiles do as they will never be in combat for more than 2 rounds with the second being retreating.

Solved!
Thank you guys!

Entirely my mistake.
It is the first time I use the rocket artillery. When I first attacked I also had my adjacent basic artillery attacking, who got hit as was to be expected. I parallel witnessed the early retreat from my rocket artillery, and misunderstood the mechanic and thougt they also got hit.

Now, when I exclusively attack with my rocket artillery they simply retreat in round 2 after they fired in the first round. Exactly as you described.

Must say I am a bit underwhelmed by this unit. I thought they would wreak more havoc.

Rockets have the advantage of range, not of power. They are more effective against armor than regular artillery, though.
