High velocity gun = high hard attack, low sof attack. I use it on tanks with a clear function to hunt and kill other tanks.
On my games metal is extreme rare to find deposits and med or heavier tanks are extremely expensive, every loss hurts a lot for you and for the AI.
Early game light tanks usually get the best that I can place on it since I am not planning to blitz the map at high speed anyway. I think on them as the Matildas on WW2, slow howitzer infantry support tanks, works wonders against minor nations armies.
1 or 2 arti battalions soften the target, light tanks move in with light infantry (recon nearby, obviously) = success, but dont work if enemy is on a ruin square, like in real life, it is a nightmare to flush infantry out of it, even low tech.
Try working on rebuilding your existing vehicle models rather than building new ones, the engine stats roll within a range that is influenced by a number of things I don't understand, however rebuilds can usually boost the engine rating. The boosted rating is only for the specific iteration of design ie a mark II will usually be better than a mark I, and all following designs III, IV and so on benefit, but do not effect that engine type as a whole.
Note to self: AT gun and RPG are very important as they can hold AI armor units
