But the fact that Spellforce franchise relies a lot on heroes for campaign makes it a very good way of getting into RTS. You can mostly focus your hero to fend off the enemies while you take your time understanding the RTS side of the game.
If you decide to try it out, just put the game on normal or easy difficulty, so that you have time to get used to the system. And once you get comfortable with the RTS mechanics, increase the difficulty to your liking.
Here are some very vague tips that help in all RTS :
- Do not stay in your corner, you need to expand to get resources
- Make sure you don't have too many idle workers. They need to work as much as possible to make your game feel fluid
- Make sure your resources stay balanced with what you do. For example in spellforce with trolls, if you realize you have 300 wood and -50 stone, remove a couple woodcutter and make stonecutters instead.
- Don't go right at the start into army or ugprading technologies. In almost all RTS, the first thing you need to focus is getting resources, to have data to work with. For example in spellforce, in the campaign you can wait 3-5 mins before making your first unit once the camp has started. It is still true in PvE ( vs the AI computer ), but is not true in PvP anymore (vs another human player)
If a combination of RPG/RTS appeals to you, it more than merits catching your eye. The following applies to single player/story:
The game is new player friendly, it not only comes with a tutorial which is well constructed (it offers text, a visual explanation and room to put it to practice) it also offers all the information about game mechanics; units; buildings; enemies and whatnot in the ingame glossary/compendium.
My wife is terrible at RTS games, yet she highly enjoyed Spellforce (SF2 SW/DS + SF3BB/SH/FG) because it was 'just right' for her.
Also needs saying that the game features a difficulty slider, adjustable at will. If you heavily struggle and want it a bit easier, putting it on the lowest setting basically let's you curbstomp everything.
