Can't consume during combat?

Okay, besides the infinite load bug, whenever I actually manage to play for more than 5min...
Well, I'm stuck on the 3rd mission since apparently I can't consume soldiers during combat (I actually had to cheat to get past the lab mission where you need to consume Infected to survive). Whenever I press the Consume button (no matter if I use the 360 controller or M+KB) it just flashes up again, Heller stretches his jaw real quick (~1-2 frames) but nothing happens. The grabbed guy doesn't get consumed, dropped or anything.
This issue directly leads to a crash when you have to hunt and consume the Blackwatch Commander at the hospital after meeting Father Guerra. As soon as I grab the Commander, the game crashes to desktop. So far, I've been unable to proceed past that point.
Can anyone help with at least this issue?

Win7 Home x64
Intel C2D E8400 3.0 OC'd to 3.6 (regular clock doesn't help either)
nV GeForce 580
4gB Corsair XMS2 RAM
Drivers all up to date

Alright, whipped out an old Vista OS due to a system drive crash, and the game still isn't working. Still won't let me consume stuff when being shot at at the same time.
I have a bunch of new components on the way, which should be here within a few days. I'm fairly sure I could bet a high amount of money on it still not working even when practically running on an entirely different system then.
Will report once the new system is up and running.

Effin' great. New system running, and the game won't even continue to the main menu because it hangs itself up on the bloody infinite loading bug right after starting.
Note to self - hands off of Activision stuff. And a proper re(de-?)commendation to everyone else out there.

I am stuck on some missions with consume commander. That sucks
Sometimes it works but i have to replay the mission dozens over dozens
