Actual Game Won't Start
So I downloaded the free key, and the game will run if that makes sense, but when I click 'play' in the game menu, it doesn't start or really do anything. Is anybody else having this problem? Or was there something I was supposed to do before or now?

Looking back, this appears to have been an issue with the configuration settings that were telling Steam what to do when Mac users pressed "Play" from their library. It appears that the intended game-launch process for Mac Users bypasses both the BoT Launcher (with its blue Play button) and the more basic Unity launcher. The BoT software on your device didn't change to break it, but Steam temporarily didn't know where to look on your device to correctly launch the app -- Steam was incorrectly trying to run Mac users through the BoT Launcher.

Devs have fixed it, go devs! No need to re-install the game or anything.

Sorry for the blind alleys in this thread as we tried to work it out.

You might just need to give it a minute? It can take a while for the game to launch from that little menu.

Now that you've tried it a couple times with no result, you might want to close down Steam and start fresh.

Also worth checking the Store Page to confirm you're using a supported OS.

I'm restarting it currently. I checked, and I'm indeed using a supported OS. :)

If you're on Windows, you can open Task Manager to confirm that when you press Play from the launcher, another Task/Program called "BookOfTravelsConfiguration" starts running. That needs to also be completed, and then it can take another little bit of time to complete and bring up the actual game ("BookOfTravels")

I'm using a Mac. I tried restarting, and it hasn't worked yet. I'll try a couple of other things to see if it works.

Hm. I'm not mac savvy.

Just to try to pinpoint where the issue is occuring, here are the steps <EDIT: THis is how it works on Windows.>
  1. press the green PLAY button in steam Library,
  2. The Book of Travels Launcher appears (should be colorful). Click the big blue Play button.
  3. The "BookOfTravels Configuration" (Unity Launcher) appears -- less colorful window with a few settings. Press "Play!" button.
  4. Actual game launches
Are you getting stuck after Step 2, or after Step 3?

I am also on a MAC and am having the same problem, OS is supported. Step 2 occurs but does not proceed to Step 3.

I suppose it's worth double-checking that you both on a 64-bit Mac system? That's a technical limitation -- the game isn't available for older, 32-bit macs.

It sounds like Unity is not launching properly. I'm doing some googling to see if I can figure out of that is a common issue.

It might also be worth going to your Library, Right-clicking, going to "Manage" err, "Properties" in the drop-down, then clicking "Local Files" and "Verifying the Integrity of game files" on Steam. It may even be worth Un-installing and Re-installing Book of Travels to see if this is some kind of issue with the install.

Mine is a new in the last year MAC so I know it is 64 bit. I'll check the local files and try reinstalling if I can't figure out anything else. I have very much been looking forward to this game so I hope I can get it to run on my machine somehow!

Try going to your "Security and Privacy" settings inside System Settings -- do you see any notification that Book of Travels was prevented from running? If so you can try to allow the program to run from that menu, I think.

Alright, so I think i DO have a 64-bit. The application does run and open and stuff. It's the play button on the in-game menu that won't work.

Bummer.
I should clarify, what they've said is that the beta is only available for 64 bit mac. For example, in project update #83:

We will of course work to fix issues with optimization, and platform specific issues for OSX and Linux, but that will be a lesser priority than general issues for the game.
I don't know if this leaves open the possibility that support could be added down the line.

So pressing the blue "Play" button doesn't get you to the next window (A smaller, more plain-looking Unity Launcher)?

My best guess right now is that this is either a file integrity issue, or a permissions issue.

If file integrity, i'd say try verifying file integrity, and/or reinstalling the game.

If permissions, try going to your "Security and Privacy" settings inside your Mac's System Settings -- do you see any notification that Book of Travels was prevented from running? If so you can try to allow the program to run from that menu, I think.

Yep, pressing it just won't do anything. I verified the files and it won't play still. I don't see any notifs for security issues either.

That is correct, pressing the blue "Play" button does not take us to a new window. I have verified the files and it claims all is well. I cannot find anything in Security and Privacy settings that indicates it was prevented from running nor does it seem to have a place that would allow me to run it even if it did. I am going to google some more about the Unity launcher and see if I can find any info. Thanks for all the suggestions Genghis Pawn!
