Well met, Traveller. The collection of questions and answers, also known as a “FAQ”, that you find before you is meant to be a living document. We’ll make sure that the most common of your questions are posted and answered here, so even if your questions aren't represented here right now they may very well be in the future. Thank you for being with us on this journey.

Technical

What are the system requirements for playing Book of Travels?
The system requirements needed to play is stated on the Steam page.

Will there be controller support?
Yes. We have already begun to add basic controller movement support but we need to do some additional work around selecting and collecting items and using UI elements.

Are there any accessibility options?
We have begun to add additional options such as the ability to increase UI size, run in Windowed mode, move with keyboard/controller stick etc but understand that there are more things we need to do, especially around the appearance and contrast of our text in UI.

I found a bug / an issue that I would like to report. How do I do that?
There is a tab in the in-game menu where you can post bugs, ideas and feedback. You can take screenshots in-game and choose to add them with your report.

On that note, is there somewhere I can give ideas and suggestions for the game?
There's a pinned thread on Steam specifically for this purpose called Suggestions & Ideas.

Is this an online only game?
Yes, you’ll need an internet connection to connect to the game servers. In other words, you won’t be able to play Book of Travels offline.

How many players can occupy the same server at the same time?
Currently the maximum number of players on a server is 7. This is something that we’re going to evaluate during our Early Access period and is subject to change.

Release, platforms and getting started

What platforms are Book of Travels available on?
PC, Mac (Intel Processor only) and Linux.

Will Book of Travels come to consoles?
Right now there’s no plan for that, as we’re laser focused on making the game as good as it can be on Steam. But we’re not ruling anything out!

When will Book of Travels leave Early Access and get a full release?
Our Early Access period, which we call “Chapter Zero”, is going to span approximately two years from the EA launch in October 2021. During this time we’ll update the game in a multitude of ways with new content, features and improvements.

I’m a Kickstarter backer and I don’t know how to get my Earlybird rewards.
An account code is how we keep track of whether you are a Backer, an Early Bird, and/or a Secret Cultist. When you have created your Book of Travels account, you can enter your account code(s) in the "Account Settings” on the Character Selection screen. You enter the code and press submit.

I’m a Kickstarter backer, and some of the promised rewards haven't arrived yet. What’s the deal?
Some of the rewards, like the soundtrack or the Illustrated Lore Compendium, aren’t quite ready for Early Access launch. They’re slated for release closer to the final release of Book of Travels (look at our Kickstarter update with details) So rest easy, they’re on their way.

I’ve put in my Account Code but I can’t find my knapsack. Where is it?
You should be able to find it in the Train Master’s chest.

Is there a roadmap, or a plan for content that’s in store for the game later down the line?
Yes. You can check out our roadmap, which we call our ‘Early Access Journey’, right here. Check back once in a while and keep track of our progress!

Mechanics

Can my friend and I join the same server and meet up in-game?
You can manually select what server to connect to and if you choose the same start narrative you’ll spawn at the same place.

How do I save my game?
Book of Travels is an online game and it saves your progress continuously, no manual saving is needed.

Can players trade items with one another?
Not directly. This is something we want to be very cautious about since we don’t want to mess with game balance. In the future we’d like to implement some kind of gifting system that would let players give things through a special ritual.

Can players battle each other in-game?
Book of Travels is essentially a serene Player V Environment (PVE) game. Based on feedback we may evaluate options such as duels but are not currently committed to this.

How do players communicate with each other in-game? Is there text or voice chat?
There is no text or voice chat, no. Players will communicate with a diverse set of emotes that will grow during the course of their adventures. We saw great success with this system in our game Meadow, where players quickly started to develop their own language that transcends any cultural barriers we have in the real world. Also, this way we eliminate any potential verbal harassment.

Can your character die in Book of Travels?
Yes, your character can die in Book of Travels. Exactly what happens will remain undisclosed.

How does the inventory system work?
You’ll have a modest amount of inventory slots initially. You’ll get more as you find and equip better bags. Clothes provide less physical protection than armor, but have more pockets. This is the kind of balancing act the player will have to consider.

Can I add players I meet in-game to my friends list?
There is no friends list in the game as of yet, so not currently.

Is this a survival game?
It isn’t strictly a survival game, but there are elements of it. You have to keep your character fed and rested, for instance, or else they might perish due to malnutrition or fatigue.

What happens to my character when I select a server in a different region?
Your characters are bound to their region. When you connect to an Europe server, you can select characters created on an Europe server. When you connect to an Asia server, you can select characters created on an Asia server, and so on.

Cost and pricing

How much will the game cost?
Book of Travels will cost you around $30, depending on your regional pricing and pricing may increase over time. There will also be additional content that requires a purchase, but these will be cosmetic items such as new clothing looks and not content based on visiting new game areas.

Some online RPGs operate on a subscription fee, will there be some kind of subscription fee to play Book of Travels?
No, you buy the game once and that’s it. There will be some DLC content available to buy along the way.

Localisation

How many languages does the game support?
Currently the game only supports English. We have already started to add a localization system. However, until the story content is locked translations can be troublesome, as you need to keep translating as you change the story. We have not yet fully decided what languages we will support beyond English.

How many servers will there be at launch, and in what regions?
We have a scaling system that will bring up more servers when needed, so everyone who logs in should have a spot. Currently, we have server regions for Europe, US West, US East and Asia, but we are open to putting up more regions depending on demand.
