This is what worked for me (so far, I mean, I am just at the beginning of the game, so let's see how it goes, but hey, I managed to start it nevertheless):
1. Windows defender: add the HZD Folder to the exceptions (I had tried this on itself, and it was not enough though). Open Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection,Manage settings, Exlusions, Add or remove exclusions, Add an exclusion, Add the HZD Folder where the game is installed (steamapps/common/Horizon Zero Dawn)
2.a. Nvidia Driver. Make a clean install of the latest driver 451.67, not just from GeForce Experience, but rather from here: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx --> download the latest driver for your GPU, during the installation select CUSTOM, and check the box "Clean installation"
2.b. In my case I got a slight problem. I checked re-start the system but since I have a Monitor and a TV plugged to my GPU, at first I though I broke something because I was not seeing the start screen on my monitor. I then turned on the TV and there it was... so, in case you have more than one monitor attached, be sure to check in case your main monitor stays black.
3. I unplugged my gaming mouse, Roccat LEADR (the docking station) from my PC. Instead I used a common wired mouse.
4. I unplugged my controller. Nacon Revolution 2. I unplugged the dongle from my PC.
5. Normally I use MSI DRAGON CENTER to boost my system. This optimizes the system while also starts MSI afterburner. I DID NOT USE NEITHER OF THEM.
6. Run Steam as an admin. Got to the steam.exe file, select properties, compatibility, check the box "Run as an admin" - BUT, also start Steam by right clicking on it, and from the menu select Run as admin. This might be redundant but hey, the game is running now.
7. Run HZW the same was as Steam, as an admin.
Finally, the game started. Funny thing, it went straight to the starting scene. It did not load shaders or anything. I was having trouble always during this part. Either the game crashed, or my PC crashed. It was randomly crashing at 3, 5 up to 30% of the bar. But with the above steps, the game just skipped this part. I do not understand why. Maybe the F shaders and stuff was already installed because I tried so many times before- no idea.
8. While in game, with Aloy as a child, I plugged my gaming mouse and controller again and the game did not crash. You can use either Mouse and Keyboard, or a Controller though. Some games support both at the same time (controller left hand, mouse right hand for example).
The cut scenes are a bit strange, but ok so far.
Finally, my rig:
Monitor Samsung 49" 5120x1440, SSUXEN model. Strange, this is a HDR monitor, but the game does not recongize it as such. The HDR option is greyed out.
Mouse Roccat LEADR wireless
Keyboard Corsair K65 wireless
CPU i7-6700K
GPU MSI RTX 2080TI 11G OC Duke
64 GB DDR4 RAM
Controller Nacon Revolution
