there is a hunting ground challenge where you have a limited time to kill 6 small machines and one scorcher. I can get three small guys in the time limit, 4 once. Upgraded stormslinger. The small guys charge up and attack or the scorcher kills me because the stupid weapon take forever to charge up then fires a slow moving ball of lightning, which it so happens, that the daemon infected machines are mostly immune to by default.

opinions vary. but remember you get one for free and can buy another - leave one un-upgraded. both have merits, the stock one turns out to be more useful in most situations where you don't need sheer damage but zapping everyone.

like the sling, it takes practice, whipping it out at the last minute is probably suicidal, but it is useful to me. again, opinions vary, that's why there's a variety of weaponry, use what makes sense to you!
