Your inventory space can be upgraded in the menu. There is no base camp like the sequel(s), everything is in the menu.
Pure cash items will say so in their description. Small items are easy to pile up, so sell them and hunt them on demand. There is a major city that will pretty much list all you ever need.
Stealth armor is excellent all purpose utility for the entire game. Stack even more stealth to break enemy AI. Going on a stealth rampage is a great way to restock on items.
You can change armor in combat, so experiment with various damage mitigation. Fire and ice resistance are particularly useful against some annoying types.
For weaves:
Damage = obvious
Handling = fast draw
Element = stack one type, broken busted good
1) The Tripcaster is a tripwire. So, you need to simply place down your Casts where you either THINK the machines will go/be, or where you will intend to try and lure them to so that they trigger the trap. It's a weapon about pre-planning.
2) The ammo you use is crafted by you; when you bring up your weapon wheel you have the ability to craft your ammo within the wheel. You'll find the button prompt to do so at the bottom of the interface, depending on if you're Mouse/Keyboard or controller.
3) Sell whatever you want, but there are dedicated Valuables items intended strictly for selling. They have the use description of "selling for metal shards". The menu is correct; you simply may have sold something previously that was useful. As with every item though, fret not; where you got one you get more.
4) I assume by "Mods" you mean the Coils and Weaves. Again; put whatever you want, or fits the weapon/situation -- whether it's more defense for armor against a specific element, boosting Tear damage for your weapons, or boosting element damage, etc... Don't worry TOO much about this particular aspect, tbh; as you noted, you get the best stuff in the Banuk territory post-game in the DLC area(s) -- the same applies to weapons, you get the best in the game from the Banuk territories. Well into the end-game and post-game, and even better in NewGame+. Also, yes, you can add and remove your Coils/Weaves to any weapon or armor at ANY time.
Regarding your statement about knowing Weaknesses of the machines and such, you don't need to use your Notebook -- at least not in battle. Use your Focus and scan the machines, particularly before you engage a fight, if possible. Your Focus is an absolutely invaluable tool; use it. Also, don't be afraid to cheese the AI with stealth; if you get in a fight, lose the line of sight then hide in a bush, and Silent Strike the enemy (when you unlock the skill). EZ kills. Also, you can cheese AI when they're only in Caution/Search mode (yellow lights/symbol) by luring them with rocks (which you have infinite of) or your whistle.
