Spear upgrade before new spear
I was pretty overlelvelled for much of HZD just be doing the side quests and hunting grounds and such. So when I was level 30+ I found myself up north and checked out the frozen wastes a little bit. One of the first quests is to get a mod slot on your spear.

Now I heard there is a new spear you can get and someone said if you get the mod upgrade before the new spear you end up losing a mod slot. The new spear has two and could get a third with the upgrade if you don't get it on your oroginal spear.

That seems like wonky design (the mod flat should be on all spears) so I'm skeptical but wanted to make sure while I can still go back a save.

the 3rd isn't really a slot, it's apparently only for Aloy's green spear, the get mommy's spear from the mean ol monster, and dad upgrades your spear to blue and you get a slight boost... the other spear you get is already blue, so I don't know if it'll give you ~5 damage points or something, If others say it does apply the damage boost, I'd take em at their word.

but no, you did it correctly if you got the blade off the FW mission before going into the "now I know everything" stage and getting your "real" spear, so you got two slots not one. (that also may be tied to level, some only get 1 slot because they're still lower level, I'm sure it's on a wiki somewhere)

The area up north is a dlc area. The spear had no slots until the dlc came out.

It doesn't matter which order you do them in. You end up with the same number of slots regardless.

If you do the quest earlier when you still have the first spear, you get one slot. You do it later, you get two.

You get the second spear before doing the quest? Two slots.

You can't miss anything.

Thanks, Woiuld expect that to be the case. The post saying otherwise didn't pass the smell test which is why I figured I'd check.

not 100% true, though - I personally had a save where Aloy is 60th and did all the base game but going to sleep before the big battle, then went up to FW... and got one mod slot, not two. Loaded a couple saves back, not all the way to Sylen's spear just not maxxed out yet, went straight to FW to the shaman and did his drone hangar quest, and got two. it definitely does glitch out, just enough to add confusion to the posts you're reading. The fact we have no idea what the trigger is, is the worst of it. There's no concrete "don't do this or else" answer for almost every one of these. Our go-to answer is it's mods, but in this case I was vanilla.

I mean I just had a flying thunderjaw - it was stuck on terrain, navigated into a stuck spot (the mission one in the box canyon) it unstuck itself by going up... it's in midair, like 12m off the ground, but walking flat, like there's an invisible floor up there. He can't melee or tail thrash me, and aiming straight up is difficult when he tries to get me, I had to sprint-slide out from under him a lot and tearblast more parts off... finally dropped him but can't loot him. Saved and reloaded, he's alive again, but at least he's back on terra firma.

It's probably just one more of those things the game messes up once in a while. Thankfully they're not that common. (the spear, not the levitating trex, but that's also very rare and the first time I've seen it, was very funny, but not the intended behaviour.)

You must have hit an exceedingly rare glitch then. Not sure why you felt the need to include an entirely unrelated anecdote, but, whatever.

mostly boredom and that i type really really fast, most coders do, 120wpm is for processors of words not people inventing things in their minds... gamers come in all forms though, some touch-type twofingered and can still hit 40wpm...

and, the fact we know some of the glitches, but I guarantee people have experienced other ones and never said anything, that manifest when in certain criteria are met...
