The initial part is quite okay - but when it comes to the big boys this area has to offer, you better be well prepared. Fighting them makes a Thunderjaw look like its just a watcher with some stuff added.
If you are in for the spear upgrade for instance, that can be quite easily done. However, i am quite certain that you most probably need the main story spear upgrade first to be able to access that quest. As said, not 100% sure - but the quest giver certainly gave that impression.
The DLC and game adjust to where you are in the game, so they won't spoil each other. However, if you haven't met a certain individual in the main game, you will not get any dialogue options about them in the DLC.
It's not necessary to have the spear upgrade from the main story to start the DLC upgrade quest. In my current save, I went and grabbed it straight after leaving the Nora lands. From what I've read (I'm still not there yet, myself), the main story upgrade just gets an extra slot automatically if you've completed the DLC quest first.
Ah, okay - good to know. From the QG talk it seemed like he was praising that exact spear you get later on.
Opening the DLC content after you complete the main The Mountain That Fell quest is a good spot: Complete The Mountain That Fell and get the Shield Weaver armor, since the armor will help you in the new DLC area. Rush the spear upgrade quest early, yes you have to travel a long way in the new DLC area to get the spear upgrade but you can sneak past dangerous hunting grounds, and the required battle for the quest is not even close to being a boss fight from the mainline game.
Also do the hunting required to get the Bluegleam map and run around and collect all the Bluegleam. Again you can sneak past the vast majority of new machine types, and with a stock of Bluegleam you can evaluate which new DLC equipment to purchase.
